When looking back at the nearly 3 million years of hominid existence, it is hard to deny that we were all once wild! However, rapid environmental changes that have taken place in the last 200 years, since the industrial revolution, have significantly altered the way we live. The problem is, while these radical changes to our environment have been taking place, the human genome has stayed relatively the same as it was 200 years ago!

According to Dr. Stephen Ildari, there is now “a profound mismatch between the genes we carry, the bodies and brains that they are building, and the world we find ourselves in.”

Ildari explains that “we were never designed for the sedentary, indoor, socially isolated, fast-food-laden, sleep-deprived frenzied pace of modern life.” We were designed to be wild, but modern life is forcing humans into conditions that the design was not meant to accommodate.

We are being denied the opportunity to live authentically, at both a human and individual level, and our health, happiness and wellbeing are all suffering.

Fortunately, worldwide, there is a growing trend towards restoring wild systems.

But if we, as humans, are to be restored to our wild conditions, we must take a holistic approach by acknowledging that everything - how we eat, move, sleep, think and live - are all connected and all are relevant to our health, happiness and wellbeing.
